Between 1903 and 1905, Alfred Le Petit, draughtsman and caricaturist, spent long periods at the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris. There he kept a diary and drew for himself and for the medical staff. His writings and drawings, serious or humorous, portray life on the wards: patients, nurses and doctors, in a hospital undergoing transformation.
