This book is a unique testimony about the Nazi extermination camp of Mauthausen. Through hundreds of photographs, it shows the cruelty of the system from within. The images were taken by the SS themselves during the camp's activity, many of which were destroyed by the Nazis as their defeat approached. Francesc Boix, a young prisoner in Mauthausen and employed in the photographic laboratory, with the help of companions, managed to extract and hide these photographs for years. With the SS's Leica camera, Boix captured shocking scenes from the first minutes of liberation, showing both the joy of recovered freedom and the final horrors. Boix testified at the Nuremberg trial, but many of these photographs remained unpublished for decades. The results of an investigation in ten countries, with the collaboration of numerous witnesses, allow these images to be gathered for the first time and reveal their main keys.
