«Fleuve profond, sombre rivière» is Marguerite Yourcenar's anthology of Negro spirituals (Gallimard, paperback, 288 pp., in French).
This anthology brings together Negro spirituals commented on and translated into French by Marguerite Yourcenar. Yourcenar claims these songs born of slavery as genuine poetry: despite the barriers of dialect and an imposed language, they express dreams, resignation, rebellion, pain and faith.
Paperback edition of 1974 in the Poésie/Gallimard collection; the work originally appeared in 1964.
For readers interested in poetry, African-American culture and the history of Negro spirituals.
