«Enfants sans enfants» is Enrique Vila-Matas's collection of short stories published in 2006 by Christian Bourgois Editeur in paperback (330 pages, in French).
The book brings together forty-one short stories that engage with Kafka's life and work: each text includes a quotation from the Czech writer, often playful and arbitrary, and is set in a different region of Spain. Vila-Matas portrays anonymous and marginal characters —«children without children»— across forty-one years of Spanish history, in a register ranging from humour to melancholy.
French edition translated by André Gabastou from the Spanish original «Hijos sin hijos» (1993); it is number 3 in the Titres collection.
For those who read in French and want to discover Enrique Vila-Matas's short fiction and his nods to Kafka.
