«En el último azul» is the historical novel by Carme Riera, published by Punto de Lectura in hardback (464 pages, in Spanish).
In 1687, a group of Majorcan converso Jews tries to flee for fear of the Inquisition; the escape fails and thirty-seven are condemned to the stake in 1691. From there, Carme Riera recreates the lives of the crypto-Jews and interweaves stories of inquisitors, aristocrats, merchants, peasants and bandits to portray intolerance.
Originally published in Catalan as «Dins el darrer blau» (1994), it received the National Narrative Prize in 1995.
For readers of historical fiction and for those interested in seventeenth-century Majorca and inquisitorial persecution.

Carme Riera Guilera is a novelist and essayist. She has also written short stories, scripts for radio and television and literary criticism. She holds a doctorate in Hispanic Philology and is a professor of Spanish literature at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
