«Elisabeth, emperatriz de Austria-Hungría» is the historical novel by Ángeles Caso, published by Círculo de Lectores in hardback (345 pages, in Spanish).
The narrative follows the life of Elisabeth of Bavaria, empress consort of Franz Joseph I, and dismantles the rosy legend of Sissi: it presents her as a cultured, ironic and free woman, averse to the court and conventions, who took refuge in solitude and travel.
The work was originally published in 1992 as «Elisabeth de Austria-Hungría o el hada maldita»; this edition was published in 2003.
For those seeking a fictionalised approach to the historical figure of Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi.
María de los Ángeles Caso Machicado is a Spanish journalist, translator and writer. She is a recipient of the Premio Planeta de Novela.
