The Nagasaki Quintet is a novel by Aki Shimazaki, winner of the Prix Ringuet, the Canada-Japan Literary Prize, and the Governor General's Award. The story focuses on Yukiko, who holds a terrible secret: on the morning of August 9, 1945, before the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, she killed her father. In a letter she leaves to her daughter after she dies, she confesses to the crime and reveals that she has a stepbrother. Soon it will be discovered that Yukiko is not the only one who kept unspeakable secrets. Personal stories are intertwined with historical events: World War II in Japan, conflicts with Korea, and the 1923 earthquake. Through the generations, a lucid portrait emerges of a Japanese society full of contradictions and linked to its traditions. The novel highlights nature as a constant and discreet presence, as delicate and elegant as Aki Shimazaki's writing.

Aki Shimazaki is a Canadian novelist and translator. She moved to Canada in 1981, living in Vancouver and Toronto. Since 1991 she has lived in Montreal, where she teaches Japanese and publishes her novels in French.
