«El otoño del patriarca» is a novel by Gabriel García Márquez, published by Literatura Random House in hardback, in Spanish.
The novel portrays an old Caribbean dictator who clings to power for decades; in six narrative blocks without dialogue or paragraph breaks, the cyclical story insists on the same events with variations. García Márquez addresses the solitude of absolute power, corruption, and decay, with Latin American reality elevated to myth.
García Márquez wrote the novel in Barcelona between 1968 and 1975 and originally published it in 1975; he himself cited it as the work in which he invested the most effort.
For readers of literary fiction interested in the magical realism of García Márquez, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.

Gabriel José García Márquez was a Colombian writer and journalist, known affectionately as Gabo or Gabito throughout Latin America. Considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, particularly in the Spanish language, he was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. He pursued a self-directed education that resulted in leaving law school for a career in journalism. From early on he showed no inhibitions in his criticism of Colombian and foreign politics. In 1958, he married Mercedes Barcha Pardo; they had two sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo.
