«El fraile y la Inquisición» is the historical essay by Manuel Fernández Álvarez, published by Espasa in hardback (332 pages, in Spanish).
The book traces the life of Fray Luis de León, an Augustinian friar, poet and professor at the University of Salamanca in the sixteenth century, from his academic training and examinations for chairs to the imprisonment he suffered between 1572 and 1576 by order of the Inquisition. Manuel Fernández Álvarez places him in the Spain of Philip II, immersed in the Counter-Reformation and rigid ideological control.
Work published in 2002 in the Espasa Forum collection and nominated for the National Essay Prize; includes bibliographic references and an onomastic index.
For readers interested in the history of Spain in the sixteenth century, the Inquisition and the figures of Golden Age lyric poetry.
