«El desafío de las damas» is the historical novel by Almudena de Arteaga, published by Ediciones Martínez Roca in hardback (384 pages, in Spanish).
In seventeenth-century Madrid, six women of very different backgrounds conspire against the Count-Duke of Olivares, the favourite of the weak Philip IV, while the Spanish empire crumbles and several regions threaten to secede. Each carries a personal grievance —dishonour, the murder of a husband, ruin, the abduction of a son or loyalty to the crown— and all end up sharing the same goal: to destroy the powerful minister.
The full title includes the subtitle «La verdad sobre la muerte del conde duque de Olivares» and the work belongs to the MR Novela Histórica collection.
A read for fans of historical fiction set in the seventeenth-century Spanish court.
