In 'The Closed Circle', Jonathan Coe introduces us to the characters of 'The Rotters' Club' twenty years later. The novel explores how the passage of time and world events, such as terrorism and political changes, have affected their lives. Benjamin Trotter, Doug Anderton, Philip Chase, and Sean Harding face new challenges and dilemmas in a transformed England. This work is a meditation on the consequences of terrorism, an examination of the spirit of post-9/11 politics, and a satire of everything and everyone.

Jonathan Coe is an English novelist and writer. His work has an underlying preoccupation with political issues, although this serious engagement is often expressed comically in the form of satire. For example, What a Carve Up! (1994) reworks the plot of an old 1960s spoof horror film of the same name. It is set within the "carve up" of the UK's resources that was carried out by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative governments of the 1980s.
