In 1537, during the reign of Henry VIII, lawyer Matthew Shardlake is tasked with investigating a murder in a monastery. Thomas Cromwell sends Shardlake to investigate the beheading of one of his commissioners. As Shardlake delves deeper into the mystery, he uncovers intrigues, secrets, and sacrileges that test his faith and force him to question everything he believes. This historical mystery novel immerses the reader in the dark and dangerous Tudor England, where politics and religion intertwine in a suspenseful plot.
