«Der König David Bericht» is the historical novel by Stefan Heym, published by Fischer Taschenbuch in paperback (281 pages, in German).
King Solomon commissions the scribe Ethan to write the official chronicle of the life of his father, King David. As he investigates, Ethan discovers a reality very different from the glorious image he must convey and finds himself caught between his commitment to the truth and the royal commission. A novel that satirises power, censorship and the manipulation of history.
Written by the dissident German author Stefan Heym, the novel was originally published in 1972 and bears the subtitle «Roman».
A read for those who enjoy fiction with a historical background, political satire and twentieth-century German literature.
Helmut Flieg was a German writer, known by his pseudonym Stefan Heym. He lived in the United States and trained at Camp Ritchie in 1943, making him one of the Ritchie Boys of World War II. In 1952, he returned to his home to the part of his native Germany which was, from 1949 to 1990, the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany. He published works in English and German at home and abroad, and despite longstanding criticism of the GDR remained a committed socialist.
