«Der kleine Bär» is the children's book by Else Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak, published by Sauerländer in hardback (63 pages, in German).
The book brings together four stories of a little bear and his mother: the bear asks for a coat to play in the snow, prepares soup for his birthday, travels to the moon with a helmet, and delays his bedtime. They are everyday scenes of affection between mother and son, with the childish desire to fend for oneself.
It is the first volume of the «Little Bear» series; the original work was published in 1957 and this German edition appeared in 1997.
Suitable for early readers, it is also appropriate for reading aloud with young children.

Maurice Bernard Sendak was an American author and illustrator of children's books. Born to Polish-Jewish parents, his childhood was impacted by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust. Sendak illustrated his own books as well as those by other authors, such as the Little Bear series by Else Holmelund Minarik. He achieved acclaim with Where the Wild Things Are (1963), the first of a trilogy followed by In the Night Kitchen (1970) and Outside Over There (1981). He also designed sets for operas, notably Mozart's The Magic Flute.
