In 'De los arquetipos y leyendas', Julio Caro Baroja explores the relationship between history, literature, and legends, arguing that history is a reflection of reality, influenced by word and fiction. He analyzes how historical figures are shaped by popular narratives and cultural expectations, distorting reality to fit pre-existing models of heroes. This study examines the verbal activity underlying historical and literary accounts, revealing how they depart from reality with the intention of reflecting it as it is perceived.

Julio Caro Baroja was a Spanish anthropologist, historian, linguist and essayist. He was known for his special interest in Basque culture, Basque history and Basque society. Of Basque ancestry, he was the nephew of the renowned writer Pio Baroja and his brother, painter, writer and engraver Ricardo Baroja. He is buried in the family plot of the cemetery of Bera, Navarre, near their home, Itzea.
