«D'acier» is the novel by Silvia Avallone, published by Liana Levi in paperback (386 pages, in French).
The action takes place in Piombino, an industrial city overlooking the Mediterranean and the island of Elba, where factories and concrete blocks have grown up alongside the beach. Anna and Francesca, about to turn fourteen, reign over this setting: they dream of escaping, use their beauty, and rely on their friendship to face an environment of hard work in the steelworks and overwhelmed families.
Translated from the Italian by Françoise Brun; the original title is «Acciaio». Belongs to the Piccolo collection no. 88. Campiello Opera Prima Prize 2010 and Prix des Lecteurs de L'Express 2011.
For readers of contemporary fiction and coming-of-age stories: bonds forged in adolescence, between landscape and industry.
