«Cyrano de Bergerac» is the play by Edmond Rostand, published by Penguin Classics in paperback (224 pages, in English).
In seventeenth-century France, Cyrano, a poet and soldier in love with Roxane, believes his large nose prevents him from declaring his feelings. When the handsome Christian asks for his help to win her over, Cyrano writes love letters on his behalf, giving rise to a triangle of honour, heroism and unrequited love.
The original play dates from 1897, and this annotated edition is part of the Penguin Classics collection.
For lovers of classic theatre and romantic stories, and for those seeking a French classic in English translation.

Edmond Eugène Alexis Rostand was a French poet and dramatist. He is associated with neo-romanticism and is known best for his 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac. Rostand's romantic plays contrasted with the naturalistic theatre popular during the late nineteenth century. Another of Rostand's works, Les Romanesques (1894), was adapted to the 1960 musical comedy The Fantasticks.
