«Clarissa Oakes» is the historical novel by Patrick O'Brian, published by HarperCollins in hardback in 1992 (288 pages, in English).
During the Napoleonic Wars, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin carry Clarissa Oakes aboard the HMS Surprise, a young convict transported as a passenger. Her presence disrupts the ship's harmony, bringing tensions of authority, loyalty, and justice to the surface, on a voyage that combines naval adventure and human relationships in the nineteenth century.
It is the fifteenth instalment of the Aubrey-Maturin series; in the United States the novel appeared under the title The Truelove.
Aimed at readers of historical fiction and naval adventure, especially those already following the Aubrey-Maturin series.
Patrick O'Brian, born Richard Patrick Russ, was an English novelist and translator, best known for his Aubrey–Maturin series. These sea novels are set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and centre on the friendship of the English naval captain Jack Aubrey and the Irish–Catalan physician Stephen Maturin. The 20-novel series, the first of which is Master and Commander, is known for its well-researched and highly detailed portrayal of early 19th-century life, as well as its authentic and evocative language. A partially finished 21st novel in the series was published posthumously containing facing pages of handwriting and typescript.
