«Civilizations» is the alternate history novel by Laurent Binet, published by LGF/Le Livre de Poche in paperback (384 pages, in French).
Civilizations posits an alternate history in which the Vikings bring the horse, iron and immunity to European diseases to the Incas. In 1531 Atahualpa lands in a Europe of Charles V divided by religious and dynastic conflicts, where oppressed populations find allies in the invaders. It thus reverses the conquest of America.
The novel was originally published in 2019 and this paperback edition appears in 2020. It won the Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie française (2019) and the Sidewise Award (2021).
A read for those who enjoy alternate histories and historical fiction about encounters between Europe and America.
