«Cinco horas con Mario» is the novel by Miguel Delibes, published by Ediciones Destino in paperback (280 pages, in Spanish).
Carmen keeps vigil over her husband Mario's corpse for one night. As she leafs through the Bible he used to underline, she begins an intimate, rambling monologue reviewing their years of marriage: mistakes, resentments, joys and misunderstandings. Through Carmen's limited mindset, the novel reveals Mario's figure and offers a critical portrait of Spanish society of its time.
2010 edition, number 6 in the Destino Clásicos collection, released on the occasion of Delibes's 90th anniversary.
For readers of classic novels and 20th-century Spanish fiction.
