Carlo V

Synopsis of Carlo V

«Carlo V» is the historical biography of Emperor Charles V written by Jean-Michel Sallmann, published by Bompiani in hardback (420 pages, in Italian).

Charles V (1500-1558) ruled an empire stretching from Flanders to Spain and from Germany to America. Inspired by Erasmus of Rotterdam, he united inherited and conquered territories, and dreamed of reunifying Christendom as a new Charlemagne, but the advance of Lutheranism and nationalist revolts eventually led him to abdicate.

Part of the Bompiani Biografie collection; the edition was published in December 2000.

For enthusiasts of early modern European history, the Habsburg Empire, and biographies of great monarchs.
