Candide or Optimism is a philosophical novel by the French writer Voltaire, published in 1759. The work follows the adventures of a young man named Candide, who is indoctrinated into the philosophy of optimism by his tutor, Professor Pangloss. Throughout his travels, Candide witnesses and experiences a series of calamities and horrors that test his belief that "all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds." Through satire and irony, Voltaire criticizes naive optimism and passivity in the face of suffering, inviting reflection on the nature of good and evil, and the pursuit of happiness in an imperfect world.

François-Marie Arouet, known by his pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, philosopher (philosophe), satirist, and historian. Famous for his wit and his criticism of Christianity and of slavery, Voltaire was an advocate of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and separation of church and state.
