Jean-Marie Gourio spent years noting down in bars and cafés phrases heard at random: absurd quips and small verbal discoveries with a surprising poetic force. To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of that practice, he gathered six hundred unpublished notes with a selection of his favourites, without saying which are new.
This edition was published on 11 October 2007. Gourio began in 1987 his practice of transcribing what he heard in public places, and later continued with «Les Nouvelles Brèves de comptoir».

Jean-Marie Gourio is a French novelist, humorist and screenwriter. He was born in Nérac, Lot-et-Garonne. He won early fame for his column Brèves de comptoir, published in the satirical magazine Hara-Kiri. Compilations of the columns were published annually, and even adapted for the stage.
