«Bonjour minuit» is the novel by Jean Rhys published by Editions Denoël in paperback (236 pages, in French).
Sasha Jansen returns to Paris, where twenty years earlier she lived a great love and its failure. She avoids the past, but memory overwhelms her. With disillusioned humour, she crosses paths with a young man in the interwar Montparnasse whom she calls «el gigoló» and who mistakes her for a rich Englishwoman. Unable to live or die, she feels a heart she thought dead revive.
Original title: «Good Morning, Midnight» (1939). This French edition (2014), from the Empreinte collection, includes a preface by Fanny Ardant and a translation by Jacqueline Bernard.
For readers of twentieth-century classic fiction interested in French literature and interwar Paris.
