«Auschwitz. Ero il numero 220543» is the testimony of Denis Avey and Rob Broomby, published by Newton Compton Editori in hardback (329 pages, in Italian).
In 1944, Denis Avey, a British soldier captured in North Africa, is sent to a labour camp near Auschwitz. After hearing the prisoners' accounts, he swaps his uniform with a Jewish prisoner to enter the camp and see for himself what happens there, risking his life to gather testimonies of the horror.
It belongs to the collection «I volti della storia». The story was publicised in 2009 thanks to BBC journalist Rob Broomby, and in 2010 Avey was decorated as a 'Holocaust hero'.
Recommended for young people and adults interested in the history of the Holocaust and in real testimonies from the Second World War.
