«Alex the Parrot: No Ordinary Bird» is the children's picture book by Stephanie Spinner, published by Alfred A. Knopf in hardback (48 pages, in English).
It tells the true story of Alex, an African grey parrot who was the subject of Irene Pepperberg's experiment on animal intelligence. Alex amazed scientists with his ability to count, understand abstract concepts, and speak hundreds of words, challenging what was thought possible in a non-human species. A popular science approach.
Published in 2012, with illustrations by Meilo So, it is a work of narrative non-fiction.
Aimed at early readers interested in animals and science, it is also useful in the classroom or as shared family reading.
