«A Short History of Nearly Everything» is Bill Bryson's popular science essay, published by Transworld Publishers Limited in paperback.
Bill Bryson sets out to explain the great mysteries of science and how they have been discovered, from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization. He covers fields such as geology, chemistry and particle physics, and does not limit himself to what we know, but explains how scientists came to know it. Along the way, eccentric and obsessive researchers appear, portrayed with the popularizing humour that characterizes the author.
The work was originally published in 2003; this 2008 edition is presented as a new illustrated edition. The book won the European Union Descartes Prize for science communication in 2005.
Intended for curious readers who want to approach science and the history of knowledge without needing specialized training.
