«The Tsar's Bride» is the opera album by Rimsky-Korsakov with the Kirov Orchestra and Chorus and Gergiev, released by Philips in 1999 as a double CD.
Opera in four acts by Rimsky-Korsakov, with a libretto by Ilia Tyumenev based on the drama by Lev Mey. Composed in 1898 and premiered in Moscow in 1899, it was conceived as a reaction against Wagner and seeks a vocal line close to the Russian cantilena. Although common on Russian stages, it is not part of the Western operatic repertoire.
Recording made at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in October 1998. 2-CD edition with libretto in Russian and translations into English, German and French. Catalogue no.: 462 618-2.
Will appeal to fans of Russian opera and followers of Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre.
