«The Last Of The Big Plungers» is the jazz compilation by Al Grey and the Basie Wing, released in 2010 by Fresh Sound Records, on CD.
The album brings together two recordings made in Chicago when Al Grey was a member of Count Basie's orchestra, with musicians from that band: an octet and a nonet of three brass and two saxes, with arrangements by Frank Foster, Thad Jones and others. The plunger-muted trombone shines on «Things Ain't What They Used to Be» and «Don't Get Around Much Anymore».
The two original LPs are «The Last Of The Big Plungers» (Chicago, 1959) and «The Thinking Man's Trombone» (Chicago, 1960), catalogue number FSR-CD 590.
For fans of classic jazz, big-band swing and the Count Basie sound.
