«El Gato Montés» is the opera by Manuel Penella with Plácido Domingo, Verónica Villarroel and Juan Pons, released in 1992 by Deutsche Grammophon on 2 CDs.
Spanish opera in two acts with music by Manuel Penella, within the lyrical tradition close to zarzuela. It is especially remembered for its well-known pasodoble, a number often performed as a standalone piece in concerts and which has brought fame to the work beyond the stage.
The recording features Plácido Domingo, Verónica Villarroel, Juan Pons, Teresa Berganza, Carlos Chausson, Mabel Perelstein and Carlos Álvarez, with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid conducted by Miguel Roa.
Recommended for fans of Spanish opera and zarzuela, as well as for collectors of lyrical recordings with great performers.
