El álbum fue grabado poco después del lanzamiento del álbum debut en solitario de Dr. Dre, The Chronic (1992), del cual Snoop Dogg recibió gran exposición. El estilo G-funk que se encuentra en el álbum se atribuyó a ambos artistas, y se consideró una salida diferente del hip hop de la Costa Este. Gran parte del contenido lírico de Doggystyle fue escrito por el propio Snoop Dogg.
