Controversy is the fourth studio album by American artist Prince, released on October 14, 1981, by Warner Bros. Records. The album continues the themes of sex, politics, and religion explored in Prince's previous works, but delves into them in a more provocative way. Musically, Controversy is a blend of funk, pop, and new wave, with a strong emphasis on synthesizers and drum machines. The album was a commercial success, reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States and selling over one million copies.
