«Byzantia: Music of John Tavener» is the compilation by John Tavener, released in 1999 on Virgin Classics, on CD.
The album brings together sacred works by British composer John Tavener, with a language close to minimalism and the Orthodox tradition. It includes pieces such as 'The Protecting Veil', 'The Lamb' and 'Song for Athene', performed by choral and chamber ensembles, in a listening experience that combines introspection and lyricism.
A disc featuring Steven Isserlis on cello, the Chilingirian Quartet, the choirs of Winchester and King's College Cambridge, and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky.
For listeners of contemporary classical and choral music, particularly those interested in sacred minimalism and Orthodox spirituality.
