The CD brings together historical recordings from the period 1904-1928, tracing the evolution of the drums from ragtime to hot jazz. Pioneers such as Baby Dodds, Vic Berton and Sonny Greer take part, alongside other percussionists and orchestras of the era, in recordings that show how the instrument gained increasing technical and rhythmic prominence within the ensemble.

It is of interest to fans of early jazz and to those studying the history of the drums and of the genre's earliest recordings.
