Timm Thaler (Arved Friese) tiene una risa contagiosa que nadie puede resistir. El barón Lefuet (Justus von Dohnányi), un hombre muy rico, quiere poseerla a toda costa. Lefuet le propone al joven huérfano un trato inusual: si Timm le vende su risa, ganará todas las apuestas en el futuro. Timm firma el contrato.
