In 1865, on Cape Horn, pirates led by Kongre (Yul Brynner) take over a lighthouse on a remote island, leaving only one man alive, Will Denton (Kirk Douglas). Their goal is to extinguish the lighthouse beam so that ships run aground on the rocks, allowing them to pillage the wrecks. Denton attempts to stop them, and Arabella (Samantha Eggar), the sole survivor of a shipwreck caused by the pirates, joins him in his fight. The film is based on the novel by Jules Verne.
