In rural Maine during World War II, Dr. Wilbur Larch runs an orphanage where he also performs abortions. Homer Wells, one of the orphans, becomes his protégé and helps him with his medical tasks. However, Homer is curious about the outside world and decides to leave the orphanage to work on an apple orchard, where he meets a young couple and experiences new emotions and moral dilemmas. The film explores themes such as family, identity, morality, and the search for one's own path in life.
