«Spartacus» is the ballet film by Shuji Fujii (1990), starring Irek Mukhamedov, Aleksandr Vetrov and Maria Bilova, on DVD.
The work, with choreography by Yuri Grigorovich to the score by Aram Khachaturian, pits Spartacus against Crassus and reduces the pantomime to give prominence to the dance. The four main characters express their inner selves in monologues against a neutral black background, in contrast with the mass scenes, celebrations and combats.
Arthaus Musik edition with the 1990 recording at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Bolshoi Theatre orchestra conducted by Algis Zhuraitis. DVD NTSC, 136 minutes, 1 disc, colour, 1.33:1.
For fans of classical ballet and Bolshoi stage productions.
