Rome, 1944. In the last months of the Nazi occupation, the Resistance faces serious problems in maintaining the struggle. The engineer Giorgio Manfredi, one of its leaders, is wanted by the Gestapo, which aims to end the organization. Manfredi asks for help from Francesco, a typographer who is about to get married, and takes refuge in Marina's house, an actress who is his former girlfriend. However, the Gestapo is very close to him, as it has discovered that the priest Don Pietro Pellegrini collaborates with the partisans.
