In 1944 Spain, during the early years of Franco's dictatorship, young Ofelia discovers a magical labyrinth and must pass a series of trials to prove she is the princess of an underground kingdom. The film contrasts the harsh reality of the postwar period with a world of creatures and symbolism, and addresses obedience, choice, and sacrifice.
