January 1945. It is the last winter of World War II and in occupied Holland, snow covers everything and food is scarce. Michiel, a thirteen-year-old boy, lives in a village near Zwolle and is eager to collaborate with the Resistance that is growing clandestinely in response to his hatred for the Nazis, ignoring the fact that his father opposes it. Michiel's opportunity comes when his neighbor Dirk asks him to deliver an envelope in the name of the Resistance. However, Dirk is captured shortly after and Michiel sees with his own eyes how German soldiers shoot the intended recipient of the letter. Michiel will thus find a map of a nearby forest inside the envelope that will lead him to a secret cave where Jack, an English pilot who is hiding for fear of dying, lies wounded.
