«Madame Bovary» is the film by Tim Fywell (2000), starring Frances O’Connor, Hugh Bonneville and Greg Wise, on DVD.
Adaptation of Flaubert’s novel. Emma Bovary, married to a provincial doctor, feels trapped by the monotony of bourgeois life and pursues in love affairs the romantic passion she has read about in books. Those relationships soon prove as empty as her marriage. The film criticises the hypocrisy and provincial mediocrity of the 19th century.
2-disc DVD, running time 150 minutes, region 2. Original version in English, with dubbing and subtitles in Spanish.
Not recommended for under-18s; intended for adults seeking 19th-century period dramas based on classic novels.
