Stevens, a perfect British butler, serves Lord Darlington with dedication. In the 1930s, Lord Darlington is influenced by the Nazis, seeking to establish communication with the Nazi government. Miss Kenton, the housekeeper, watches these events with horror. Despite their fears, Stevens and she develop mutual feelings, although neither admits it. This film explores themes of duty, love, and the consequences of decisions made in times of political uncertainty.
