«Le Ruban blanc» is the 2009 drama film by Michael Haneke, starring Christian Friedel, Leonie Benesch and Ulrich Tukur, on DVD.
In a Protestant village in northern Germany, on the eve of the First World War, strange accidents seem to follow a punitive ritual. The story centres on the schoolteacher, the choir children and the families of the baron, the pastor and the doctor, in an atmosphere of repression and secrets that foreshadows totalitarianism.
Black-and-white film, 138 minutes, on Region 2 DVD with one disc. Audio tracks in German and French (Dolby Digital 5.1) and French subtitles. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
For those seeking a historical drama with an unsettling atmosphere and social undertones, set on the eve of the First World War.
