In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila travels from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the honor of his father, the commander of the legion. Accompanied by his slave Esca, Marcus crosses Hadrian's Wall and ventures into the unknown hills of Caledonia, where he faces savage tribes, reconciles with his father's legacy, and seeks to recover the lost legion's golden emblem: the Eagle of the Ninth.
