In occupied Kraków in 1940, Michel watches as the Germans kill his wife and daughter. Pursued, he takes refuge in the home of Martha, who resembles his wife, and helps her with the newborn. To earn money, he sells blood by breeding lice in a vaccine laboratory, while his past merges with the present.
