Jarhead is an intense war film directed by Sam Mendes that chronicles the experience of marine Anthony Swofford during the 1991 Gulf War. The story follows Swoff and his fellow marines as they are deployed to the Middle Eastern desert to fight in a war they barely understand, battling not only the enemy but also the extreme heat and the ambiguity of their mission. Based on Swofford's autobiographical book, the film provides a raw and provocative look at the lives of soldiers on the front lines.
