It recounts the Guadalcanal campaign in the Pacific during World War II: a platoon of marines must face not only the enemy, but also disease, hostile terrain and relentless climate. Adapted from the book of the same name by Richard Tregaskis, it combines war action with the portrayal of soldiers fighting to survive.
