Henri Danglard, proprietor of the fashionable but bankrupt cafe 'Le Paravent Chinois', decides to revive the cancan as the feature of a new, more popular establishment in 1890s Montmartre. He meets Nini, a laundress and natural dancer, whom he hopes to star in his new show. But a tangled maze of jealousies intervenes. This masterpiece by Jean Renoir is a vibrant tribute to show business and Parisian culture, capturing the energy and passion behind the creation of the famous dance.
