«El Havre» is the film by Aki Kaurismäki (2011), starring André Wilms, Kati Outinen and Jean-Pierre Darroussin, on DVD.
Marcel Marx, a bohemian writer turned shoeshiner, lives in Le Havre with his wife Arletty. His routine is broken when he meets a young African immigrant trying to reach London, and Arletty's health worsens. With the solidarity of the neighbourhood, Marcel confronts the police to protect the boy.
Runs 90 minutes; audio in Spanish, French and Catalan (Dolby Digital 5.1); subtitles in Spanish and Catalan. Competed in the official section at Cannes 2011 and received the FIPRESCI Prize.
For those who value social dramas with a humanist outlook: reviews describe it as a warm embrace for the uprooted and a plea against hypocrisy.
